That is a huge question that everyone who goes into the field. There are many different parts to being a chef. There is raw talent, the amount of schooling and the experience that you have. This is what judges whether or not you can be a chef.You will want to start off with going to school and actually learning about what the professional chefs do and what they did to get where they are. The best way to start is at an early age. In High School get a job that is close to a kitchen, if not in the kitchen. This will give you a good idea as to what it's like being on your feet all the time.Check with your school counselor to see if there are any culinary programs in your area. Becoming a chef takes a lot of hard work and climbing ladders. It is similar to climbing the corporate ladder, there are educational and physical steps you have to take in order to climb it.You are going to have to sit down and actually work on schooling yourself in the culinary arts and find a job in a restaurant. Without the experience you will have a hard time going from school into the work force.When you are considering taking the chef position, realize that you may not be able to jump straight into the business and immediately take the head chef position. You will need to work for that, it isn't something that can be given.Start by taking an internship at a local restaurant, this helps if you do it while you are in school. Selecting a good culinary school is also an important decision. They will help you mold yourself into the chef you want to become. When learning to be a chef it is all about how you can turn a simple meal into an artistic meal made to impress.Do you believe you have what it takes to be a chef? It takes a lot of hard work, some talent, and years of training and name building. Start small, take the local restaurant job, apply for a good culinary arts school and learn as much as you can. It is important to always look ahead to the future and ask yourself where you want to be in 10 years. Do you still want to be the school chef? Or the master chef at a 5 star restaurant?Some important tips and warnings that you might want to heed when you are in the field are: ensure that this is the career that you want to go into. That the culinary arts are the area you want to devote your working life to. When you want to work in upscale restaurants, choose a specialization that you want. This will increase your chances that you will get a good chef position that you want.Something you should be aware of is that when a head chef leaves, sometimes his entire staff of chefs is also requested to leave as well. So don't be surprised if that actually happens to you. Make sure you are always up to date on your equipment and the latest "fashions" in the cooking world.
