Over the next several years, nursing will generate the 2nd most jobs across all occupations. According to the US Department of Labor, the trend will continue through at least 2012 with higher than average growth of Registered Nurses. Similar trends are expected for home health aides and nursing specialists like practical nurses, nurse practitioners, and midwives.In the coming years, nurses will need to provide care and emotional support to patients, and their friends and family members. Schools and universities will staff a higher number of nurses to address the public's growing health care needs. The challenge and need for nurses will be high as they face a fast-paced world in the years ahead.This Nursing boom is the result of several converging factors. The Baby Boomer population segment is aging which will greatly increase the number of elderly patients. As they age, boomers will need increasing access to the health care system. America will need nurses to help the elderly remain healthy and active. Nurses' Aides will help the elderly to remain living in their homes. Many different types of nurses will find careers in treatment of the elderly.The US population continues to grow. The increase in life expectancy adds to this increased demand. Also, expanding medical technology and new discoveries in health and nutrition have caused people to live longer. New innovations in technology are alloying people to live and function much longer than ever before. New nursing techniques will also make sure that certain diseases or injuries are no longer akin to an automatic death sentence. Spinal cord injuries, severe 3rd degree burns, inherited congenital defects, and other diseases once thought to be insurmountable are now treatable. America needs educated nurses to help facilitate these trends. Nurses are a critical link in the chain to allow people to continue on to lead long and happy lives.There are many other factors that drive nursing to become a strong career choice. The existence of new diseases and the fear of impending epidemics are 2 reasons that nurses are more of a necessity than ever before. Many public health officials believe that we are due for another world-wide epidemic. Bird Flu, SARS, and Flesh-eating bacteria are recent examples of potential deadly scenarios. Nurses are needed to combat these deadly infections and other potential pandemics.Communities require nurses to aid in combating a real-time epidemic – HIV and AIDS. Although the epidemic is no longer receive the attention it once did, there is a very strong need for nurses to remain at the front lines of this battle. More nurses are a key part of the answer to assisting patients in understanding and coping with the devastating consequences of this disease. Nurses both help care for patients and educate the public about the disease, its treatments and, most importantly, how to avoid it. America is currently involved in 2 wars, which produce casualties of all types. Veterans suffer both short and long-term psychological and physical ailments. These dedicated medical professionals will require training so they can to teach veterans and their families to deal with psychological problems and recognize the signs of problems before it is too late. As you can see, there are many reasons why nursing is becoming a growth career. In the coming years the country has a critical need for an increased and active nursing sector.
